The four parts of Medicare

Medicare has four parts that work together to provide comprehensive health coverage.

Part A

Hospital Insurance

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care.

Most people don't pay a premium

Part B

Medical Insurance

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.

Standard premium: $185/month (2025)

Part D

Prescription Drug Coverage

Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs. Available through private insurance companies.

Varies by plan (average ~$40/month)

Part C

Medicare Advantage

Alternative to Original Medicare. Includes Parts A, B, and usually D, often with extra benefits.

Varies by plan (many $0 premium)

When to enroll

Initial Enrollment

7-month period around your 65th birthday (3 months before, your birthday month, 3 months after)

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment

January 1 - March 31 each year to switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan.

Annual Enrollment Period

October 15 - December 7 each year to change your Medicare Advantage or Part D plans
